On the way to Cannon Beach, we stopped in Astoria for lunch. We had to finish up with something sweet.
There WERE five of us with spoons!

Five minutes (or so) later...

B has been wanting to get some kind of ice cream maker for quite some time. We've watched too much Iron Chef I guess -- with their industrial strength ice cream maker right there at their disposal. I've had a few varieties and models over the years, but nothing that really worked that well.
KitchenAid has an attachment that we recently picked up to try. We weren't convinced it would work for what we had in mind, but we decided to try it.
The bowl above just sits in the mixer, replacing the regular bowl. You turn on the mixer, with the paddle attached, pour in the "batter", mix for 20-30 minutes, and you have soft serve ice cream (put it in the freezer afterwards for a harder mixture). The first batch we made was lemon-orange gelato. It worked pretty well (and tasted pretty good), except the blade attachment wasn't real secure. The second recipe we made was fresh raspberry ice cream. The recipe was from the same book, but it was double the volume of the gelato recipe, and pretty soon the mixture was spilling over the edges of the bowl. There was just too much stuff in there. We stopped the mixer to spoon out some of the freezing mixture, and by the time we did that, we couldn't start the mixer again because the paddle had frozen to the sides. We bagged it, and just scooped out the whole thing into a plastic container and put it into the freezer.
The whole kit and kaboodle are now repackaged in the box it all came in and we are returning it to the store. And we are still on the hunt for a decent ice cream maker.
We had some friends over yesterday and we were talking about ice cream. My brother talked about our dad's love for ice cream and when we were little, and had gone to bed, we could hear our dad eating his cold treat -- scraping his spoon against the ridges on the edge of the dish. It made a very distinctive noise and we could hear it all the way upstairs. The CAT even knew that noise meant handouts! To this day, my dad has ice cream every night! His wife "A" can't keep enough of it in the freezer.

It's a sad thing that your kitchenaid thing didn't work out. From one ice cream lover to another- good luck...
ReplyDeleteMy ice cream maker is a Cuisinart brand about like this one: Pure Indulgence™ 2 Qt. Frozen Yogurt-Sorbet & Ice Cream Maker. (They may have changed model names since I bought mine.) It works pretty darn well, and is quick. I bought it a few years ago and came up with hot diggety (or COLD diggety) recipes: Lemon Basil, Mango Ginger... When I get back from being in Gelato-land, I'll dig it out. You can try it to see if you like it.
ReplyDeleteI've been reading, and buying, issues of "La Cucina Italiana", The Italian Kitchen. They do sell it in English at De Laurenti's and other places in the U.S. They have a current issue with Gelato recipes that look divine.
